Position Description The Anoka County Public Health and Environmental Services (PHES) department has an immediate opening for a Lead Environmental Health Specialist. The Lead Environmental Health Specialist leads the daily activities for a team responsible for performing environmental health activities involving investigation, inspection, data collection and analysis, enforcement action, report preparation and public contact. The Lead Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for providing expertise and ensuring applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations are being met. This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid position. Interviews will take place the week of April 8, 2024 for those selected to move forward in the hiring process. Pay & Benefits Salary: $70,012 to $84,011 annually ($33.66 to $40.39 per hour). 2024 Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 34. $70,012 to $98,009 ($33.66 to $47.12 per hour). 24 days of paid flexible time off and up to 12.5 paid holidays. Work Location This position will work at Anoka County Government Center, located at 2100 3rd Ave, Anoka MN, 55303. This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work, with some days working remotely and some days working in the office. This position will require over 50% of the work time in the field. Expected work hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Job Duties and Responsibilities These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Lead Environmental Health Specialist. Lead inspections of complex facilities and properties, including but not limited to food and lodging facilities, public pools, body art establishments, solid and hazardous waste facilities, management of the delegated non-community drinking water program, and community events to determine conformance with applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations. Provide expertise, research, compile, synthesize, analyze and interpret information and data necessary to meet environmental health objectives. Review written reports and make recommendations for completion of environmental health projects. Lead environmental health projects, define problems and alternative solutions, and set objectives. Inform the public about projects, environmental health programs, applicable ordinances, policies and procedures related to the community services, including food and lodging facilities, public pools, body art establishments, solid and hazardous waste facilities, and community events. Present to public groups and governmental bodies to provide food safety training and explain and clarify environmental health reports and recommendations. Lead complex field investigations and complaint investigations of various sites in order to have first-hand knowledge of the location under study. Coordinate wit other individuals, developers, groups, sections, divisions, departments and agencies on various technical or legal aspects of environmental programs, some of which may be controversial or politically sensitive. Lead enforcement activities which may include civil or criminal cases and may involve issuance of citations, report writing, collection of evidence and court appearances. Provide coaching and/or mentoring to a subordinate group and may act as a program lead. Qualifications and Requirements: Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed Bachelor's degree in environmental health, food science, natural science, or a closely related field Six years (2,080 annual hours) of job-related experience with a minimum of three years in environmental health Possess current registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist with the Minnesota Department of Health or able to obtain within 3 months of hire Must have valid driver's license and vehicle available for business use Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed Master's degree or higher in environmental health, food science, natural science, or a closely related field Seven years or more (2,080 annual hours) of job-related experience in Environmental Health Possess one or more of the following certifications: Standardized Food Inspection Officer, Certified Hazardous Waste Site Worker, Licensed Subsurface Treatment System Designer/Inspector, Licensed Solid Waste Inspector, or Certified Pool Operator Physical Demands and Work Conditions Standard office environment, travel to various county work sites both indoor and outdoor, may include emergency or disaster response sites in uncontrolled environments depending on assignment Public safety equipment may include but is not limited to radios, cameras, GPS devices, radiological testing equipment such as portal monitors and Geiger counters depending on assignment, and personal protective equipment Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle Additional physical/mental requirements that occur may not be listed above, but are inherent in performing the position's essential functions Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious agents, radiation, toxic or caustic chemicals, airborne particles, fumes, or other hazards is possible while performing essential duties Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions Selection Process It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess.
