AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO) Product Engineering Technician (1094538) in Birmingham, Alabama

Works with personnel in various departments to implement and maintain configuration software to support order entry, manufacturing and other business activities and changes to these activities from a product perspective for AMERICAN Ductile Iron Pipe, AMERICAN Steel Pipe, Supply Chain, and other products as required. Assists in the maintenance of an engineering change order system to include document management (prints and other controlled documents) for the Technical Services and Product Development Department. Works with other departments to implement changes in our business system to support new products or changes in how we do business relating to the manufacturer or purchase of products for sale to our customers.

  • Implements and maintains product data in configuration software to support business activities.
  • Develops required specifications and implementation procedures for changes and additions to our business activities as related to product data to support these changes.
  • Works with manufacturing to maintain current time studies, maintain standard hours for operations, and update product data in corporate computer systems. Works with Information Technology, Cost Accounting, Marketing, Supply Chain, Project Management, and shop personnel to implement changes to product data (product structures, corporate item master (CIM), detail item master (DIM), etc.) or business practices as required.
  • Tests new software or enhancements to configuration software to verify that the data and software meets the desired business requirements.
  • Provides cost of product line to marketing cost coordinator and updates these costs as needed. Provides cost estimates for sales inquiries. Provides cost estimates on new products prior to items being entered in the system.
  • Participates on Continuous Improvement teams.
  • Maintains Product Description Reference Manual (controlled document).
  • Provides knowledge and information regarding products to Project Coordinators, PPIM, and Supply Chain.
  • Assists in setting up new items when requested by Sales and approved by Technical Services and Product Development. Coordinates routes and standards with bills of material (BOM).
  • Maintains the AMERICAN Products Engineering Change Order System and executes any required changes in product data because of an engineering change.
  • Writes technical notes and procedures to document and train employees on products, processes, or business details.
  • Maintains data integrity. Corrects and maintains accuracy of system data.
  • Locates, isolates, and analyzes detailed system problems associated with product engineering data and related activities to include but not be limited to: work centers, routes, product structures, standards, planner codes, make/buy flags, inventory adjustments for duplicate items, problems at warehouses, etc.
  • Fills in for personnel on vacation, sick, etc.
  • Follows all safety and job specific procedures.
  • Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must exhibit a minimum of two (2) years AMERICAN Ductile Iron Pipe or water works industry product knowledge or similar relevant product knowledge.
  2. Must exhibit a minimum of two (2) years of manufacturing process knowledge.
  3. Must exhibit computer skills to include good spreadsheet skills, working in a database environment, word processing, and the ability to use other purchased computer programs.
  4. Must exhibit an ability to learn.
  5. Must exhibit the ability to work with confidential information and maintain confidentiality.
  6. Must exhibit the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job duties.
  7. Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  8. Must exhibit good command of grammar and spelling.
  9. Must exhibit the ability to document procedures and changes made to a process and write up detailed work orders for others to carry out to accomplish goals set by immediate supervisor.
  10. Must exhibit a record of punctuality and good attendance.
  11. Must exhibit the ability to work well with others and present and discuss ideas in a group environment.
  12. Must exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to deal with employees in all levels of the organization.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Have an excellent knowledge of AMERICAN product line or similar product line.
  2. Have an excellent knowledge of AMERICAN manufacturing procedures or similar procedures.
  3. Have a minimum of one (1) year experience working with configuration software such as Optimus, ASI, JDE, Microsoft Dynamics AX or other similar business systems and have a good working knowledge of interactions between the systems.
  4. Have prior cost analysis experience in a manufacturing setting similar to that of AMERICAN.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Sitting required to enter data into the computer.
  • Standing required while talking with personnel in the shop, looking at drawings, looking at bill of material items, etc.
  • Walking required in the plant to different production offices.
  • Climbing stairs required to access different offices (Ductile Iron Pipe, Technical Services and Product Development, #5 Machine Shop, etc.) within the plant.
  • Stooping required to access file cabinets, shelves, and to plug in electrical cords into outlets.
  • Overhead reach required to reach books, files, binders, etc.
  • Forward reach required to enter data into the computer, access files, access binders, and perform desk activities.
  • Bended reach required to access files, books, binders, etc.
  • Handling required for phone, stapler, technical books and files.
  • Use of fingers required to enter data on the computer and to use phone, calculator, stop watch, paperwork, to write, etc.
  • Talking required for communication with co-workers and supervision, and for receiving and/or making phone calls regarding data to be entered.
  • Vision required to enter data, utilize calculator, read production reports and other information, and to observe time studies.
  • Hearing required for phone and person-to-person communication and for safety within the plant.
  • Lifting required for paper, books, etc. up to 25 pounds.
  • Carrying required for books, binders, etc. that are approximately five pounds.
  • Pushing and pulling required for file drawers with five to 10 pounds of force.
