Canton Municipal Utilities Groundman in Madison, Mississippi

This Position is for a Groundman with a municipality in Madison County.

Summary: The Groundman will assist crews and Linemen in the maintenance and construction of electric power lines and equipment, ensure distribution of electrical services to customers and community serviced by Canton Municipal Utilities. They perform all duties from ground level. Typically, this position will work with direct supervision. This is an entry level position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Construct and maintain electrical distribution systems; Makes sure that trucks and equipment are maintained and that trucks are always stocked; Also make sure trucks are cleaned and washed when necessary; May work on energized or non-energized secondary lines under supervision, not to exceed 600 volts; Described work may be done by climbing a pole, from a ladder or from a bucket truck; Assists in the installation and connection of electrical services and meters for residential, commercial and industrial structures; Operates derrick truck and bucket truck under supervision; Learns the proper use and name of all tools equipment and material; Learns basic physical and work techniques required in climbing poles; Performs on call duty after normal business hours and responds as needed to handle other emergency calls; Holiday and weekend work may be required; Complies with all safety practices and procedures; Prepares necessary paperwork and documentation

Assists with working on traffic light systems; Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of underground conductors, overhead conductors, transformers, switch gear, capacitors, and other equipment; Assists in troubleshooting of electrical system; Assists in trimming trees and brush in the vicinity of electrical conductors and assists in loading and unloading tree limbs and brush; Learns and applies the safety rules and first aid procedures applicable to work on an electric system; Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor such as decorating and wiring for Christmas and other events and activities in Canton, MS; Assists crews in assignment and duties of these events.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Walking, standing, lifting (1 -- 15 pounds tools/equipment frequently); bending, climbing, stooping, crouching, squatting, pulling frequently, pushing occasionally, reaching frequently, eye/hand coordination; looking up (head in upward position); reading; writing; withstanding moderate amounts of stress; making decisions; good communication; general math; planning; mature attitude; Must be able to perform any physical task relating to the electrical distribution system when required.

Working Conditions: Majority of work is performed outdoors, however some office work is required; This position is subject to all weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow and various hazard conditions; Flame retardant coveralls/uniforms with long sleeves on shirts are to be worn at all times; Uniforms are made of Nomex or equivalent; Frequent exposure to noise; Some work is performed in confined spaces (different depths and dimensions); Working at heights of 56' or better are possible in bucket trucks and varying heights with pole climbing; Work is performed on low voltage secondary systems not to exceed 600 volts; Work boots are required; Must be able to manage multiple priorities make sound decisions, and handle pressure.

Equipment Used: Bucket truck, derrick truck, pickup truck, flatbed truck, trailers; Pole climbing equipment such as climbing belt and hooks; Tree trimming equipment, ladders, small hand tools; Testing equipment; All safety equipment required and necessary for the job

Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED equivalent; Valid commercial driver's license (class A or B) required with clean driving record; Must have at least 3 years solid work experience in mechanical or electrical concepts and applications, constructions, etc.; Must have good attendance, be dependable demonstrate initiative and work well in a team environment; Must be able to communicate well with other employees, utilities and customers (verbal and written); Must work well with the public and customers; Must be motivated, attentive and alert; Must have an appearance that does not detract from Companys image; Must be able to respond within 30 minutes to the Utility Service Center when on-call; Available for 24-hour on-call and emergency response; Must participate as needed in working overtime on evenings, holidays and weekends; Must be able to pass pre-employment drug test, background check and MVR (motor vehicle records) check.
