Description
Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and performs major and minor repairs to specialized equipment and vehicles. Performs wrecker operations and other duties such as cleaning the interior and exterior areas of the shop, ordering and picking up parts, and logging information into the computer.
Essential Functions
Performs preventative maintenance and general repair to vehicles and equipment by performing inspections, evaluating performance, diagnosing the problem, and repairing or replacing parts.
Diagnoses and repairs vehicles by using equipment and tools to properly locate and correct any problem areas.
Performs other duties by retrieving city vehicles and towing, cleaning interior and exterior areas of the shop, ordering and picking up parts, and logging information into the computer.
Education/Experience
Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Required:
Two years of work experience performing automotive maintenance and repair duties.
Knowledge of methods, practices and theory of vehicular maintenance and repair, and hydraulics.
Knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair.
Ability to use basic computer software, such as Microsoft Windows, and Fleet Management software.
Ability to lift 75 pounds and work in dirty or hazardous area.
Additional Information & Requirements
Valid CDL (Class A) Driver’s License must be obtainable within six (6) months of hire. Candidate selected to interview for this position will be required to obtain and provide a DMV transcript (OBTAINED WITHIN THE PREVIOUS 30 DAYS) at the time of interview.
This position is eligible or a $5000/annual stipend for staff holding a Commercial Driver’s License.
ASE- Automotive Service Excellence Certification VA State Safety Inspection license preferred.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:30am-3:00pm
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a $5,000 sign on bonus.

Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
