The assistant/associate professor will support the mission of the Division and Department of Surgery. He will be responsible for pre-, post,and intraoperative care of patients and will perform advanced open and laparoscopic surgery. Responsibilities involve developing a clinicaland academic general surgery practice. This faculty member will be expected to participate with teaching surgical residents, fellows andmedical students. This position will provide direct care, participation in the support services and rehabilitation, nutrition, psychologicalsupport, and prevention programs of general surgical services at the University of Miami Hospital and affiliated facilities. Attendance andsupervision of the respective outpatient offices and clinics will be required as well as provoding coverage for on-call schedules.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (For-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort):Job responsibilities include participation in clinical and educational activities as they relate to the Division and the Department of Surgery witha special emphasis as follows:

  • Responsible for pre, post, and intraoperative care of patients.

  • The general surgeon will perform advanced open and laparoscopic surgery.

  • Responsibilities involve developing a clinical and academic general surgery practice.

  • Participates with teaching surgical residents, fellows and medical students.

  • Provide direct care, participation in the support services and rehabilitation, nutrition, psychological support, and prevention programs of general surgical services at the University of Miami Hospital and affiliated facilities.

  • Attendance and supervision of the respective outpatient offices and clinics will be required.

  • Provide attending coverage for on-call schedules.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Specialized knowledge and experience related to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management, including t hemanagement of complications, in the nine primary components of surgery listed below, all of which are essential to the educat ion of abroadly based surgeon:

  • Alimentary tract

  • Abdomen and its contents

  • Breast, skin, and soft tissue

  • Head and neck, including trauma, vascular, endocrine, congenital and oncologic disorders - particularly tumors of the skin, salivary glands, thyroid, parathyroid, and the oral cavity

  • Vascular system, excluding the intracranial vessels and heart

  • Endocrine system, including thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and endocrine pancreas

  • Surgical oncology, including coordinated multimodality management of the cancer patient by screening, surveillance, surgical adjunctive therapy, rehabilitation, and follow-up

  • Comprehensive management of trauma, including musculoskeletal, hand, and head injuries. The responsibility for all phases of care of the injured patient is an essential component of general surgery.

  • Complete care of critically ill patients with underlying surgical conditions, in the emergency room, intensive care unit, and trauma/burn units

  • Medical Degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Completed a one year fellowship in a surgical specialty.

  • Must be eligible to obtain a Florida Medical License and DEA License.

  • Must be Board eligible or Board certified in General Surgery.

Work Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a minimum of 3-5 years of open and laparoscopic surgery experience.

  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the general surgery field.
