Please note, if you are hired for this position this must be your primary job. If you have a full time job now, you will need to quit that full time job in order to accept this full time position.

Hiring Range:

$21.21/hr - $24.68/hr based on your previous custodial work experience.

Plus a $1.00/hr shift differential pay for working in the evenings

Eligible for overtime hours paid at 1.5x regular hourly pay as approved by supervisor.

Work Schedule:

Shifts are 4pm-12:30am or 5pm-1:30am

5 days each week with 2 consecutive days off

    Job Summary:

    Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties maintaining and cleaning the city’s buildings and facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

Performs a variety of custodial duties following prescribed operational and safety procedures.

Performs various combinations of the following: sweeps, vacuums, mops, waxes, strips, and polishes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets and chairs; cleans and sanitizes restroom facilities and fixtures; replenishes restroom supplies; dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork, fixtures, and equipment.

Empties, cleans, and sanitizes waste receptacles. Removes debris. Washes windows, mirrors and walls. Replaces lights and adjusts shades and blinds. Cleans air vents.

Identifies and reports building maintenance needs. Removes snow and ice on city facility walkways. Moves and arranges furniture and equipment.

Prepares rooms for conferences and meetings. Monitors buildings during meetings and secures afterwards. Unlocks and locks buildings at start and end of business day. Raises, lowers, folds, and stores flags.

Receives and reports on inquiries from the public or custodial service complaints.

May travel to various city buildings and facilities to perform work.

May serve as a lead worker for seasonal or temporary help.

May clean a facility on their own.

May be required to work overtime.

May work a varying schedule and/or shift.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED; six months of custodial experience. Previous experience with floor and carpet maintenance, use of power cleaning equipment, and cleaning chemical use and safety preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.

Knowledge of general practices and methods of custodial maintenance.

Knowledge of custodial maintenance safety procedures.

Knowledge of chemicals used in cleaning.

Knowledge of carpet and floor maintenance for a wide variety of flooring surfaces.

Skill in utilizing power equipment used in custodial maintenance, such as vacuums, floor strippers, floor waxer, and shampooing machines.

Ability to perform janitorial duties, such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, waxing, stripping, and polishing floors.

Ability to learn various techniques for cleaning and maintenance of facilities, furniture and fixtures.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions appropriately.

Ability to read and write at a level required of the position.

Ability to read, understand, and comply with instructions, policies and procedures.

Ability to properly complete Material Safety Data Sheets.

Ability to use standard office equipment, personal computer and job-related computer applications including electronic mail.

Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the general public.

Ability to demonstrate independent work within a building utilizing the city’s required procedures and processes.

Ability to solely maintain a city of Thornton facility.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have visual acuity to perform mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature. The employee is subject to environmental conditions, outside environmental conditions, both inside and outside conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibrations, hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin, close quarters, and functioning in narrow aisles or passageways.
